Construction Theme Party

Construction birthday parties are among the most popular theme parties for boys. Dump trucks and construction vehicles are easy to find and can be used both as decorations and for game prizes. Sandboxes and obstacle courses are easy to incorporate into the theme and give children of all ages a chance to be active without worrying about making a mess. When planning your party, be sure to consider the age of the guests and make sure that games, activities and snacks are suitable for your age group. Hundreds of ideas can be found online that will be helpful in planning a construction theme party, so rather than repeat the standard suggestions, below are a few ideas ideas that you may like to include in your party plans.

Construction Craft Table
Provide each child with a plastic hard hat, which they can decorate with stickers and glitter, etc.   You can provide a general assortment of wood blocks, foam and art supplies, or fill a small brown bag for each child to use.  Include a few coloring sheets, word search puzzles and other puzzles relating to trucks or construction vehicles. The coloring sheets will be ready to use if you need to fill time, and the children can take them home to do later, if there are extras.

Build a Tower Contest
Divide into teams of two or three children each and let them use their imagination to see how "constructive" they can be. But . . . instead of the usual blocks and building logs, the building supplies they will use are uncooked spaghetti and gumdrops! Be sure that the work area is clean and that children wash their hands before starting, since some of the gumdrops and maybe even the spaghetti will most likely end up being eaten. As with any other food items or snacks you plan to serve, be sure that you are aware of any allergies or intolerances any of your guests have. Award prizes in creative categories like "champion spaghetti breakers", or "team that dropped the most gumdrops". Have a camera ready to take a photo of the finished item in case one of the teams actually comes up with a masterpiece.

Demolition Derby
Since kids are always being told "be careful . . . don't break that", it can be fun to have a construction and destruction party! Collect boxes from grocery stores and let children use them to build a large building or structure. Then, let the little builders take turns being blindfolded and trying to knock all of the boxes down. If the children are old enough, you can also see who can stomp and flatten the boxes the quickest. Older boys will take great pleasure in disassembling or demolishing anything you have on hand, so you may come up with creative ideas of your own. But, make sure that whatever you plan is safe and results in no sharp or flying objects.

Pin The Wheels on the Dump Truck
You can cut a basic design from cardboard, and the rest is self explanatory.

Cookie Assembly Line
Provide sugar cookies cut out like trucks, hammers and other construction shapes for the kids to frost and decorate with sugar crystals.

Note of Warning
If you have spent much time online researching ideas for a construction themed party, you probably have come across suggestions to fill toy dump trucks with candy, or even pieces of cake. While this may be a cute idea, be sure that candy is individually wrapped and no food comes in contact with the surface of the truck. Paint can be dangerous and you can't be too careful when it comes to the health and safety of children.

Invitations
A wide variety of invitations are available for construction theme parties, so you should be able to find the perfect invitation for any age group. A construction invitation featuring cartoon animals is a favorite for toddlers. Construction truck invitations featuring dump trucks are popular for all ages. If you plan to use the construction and destruction theme, a wrecking ball invitation will fill the bill.  This invitation is also a popular choice for people who are in the process of remodeling a house!
