If the thought of a room full of toddlers covered with birthday cake seems a bit overwhelming, you
might like the idea of taking the party to the great outdoors! Your birthday girl or boy probably has a favorite park, and if it has a duck pond or
area to watch birds, it can be a great setting for a casual get-together. An outdoor celebration is fun any time of the day, but a breakfast birthday party may catch you and your young guest of honor at your
best, before your energy is gone and before either of you need a nap! Early hours are more comfortable during warmer weather, since you won't have to worry about the noonday sun. As with all parties for preschoolers,
it is advisable to keep the guest list small, and if you will be near the water, be sure to have plenty of adults available to make sure the youngsters
are safe at all times.
Breakfast can be a simple buffet of fruit, juice and several varieties
of favorite cereals. Doughnuts or strudels make a great substitute for the traditional birthday cake. With a breakfast gathering you probably won't need to reserve the area, but to make sure, check with the park officials
as to availability and ask about any special rules that may apply (including whether or not feeding the ducks is allowed).
Let your guests
know the party is outside, and include a rain date on the invitation if your location doesn't have a shelter house, or covered area.
A wide
variety of duck themed invitations are available for children, including
the one shown above from Tiny Tidings, which is especially for birthday parties. (The number of candles on the
birthday cake can be changed.) Be sure to allow some enough
time for the kids to run in the grass and enjoy the fresh air. In addition to utilizing the ducks, trees and any specially landscaped areas for
photos of the kids, you might like to provide a few disposable cameras so the kids can take pictures too. Later, when you send thank you notes, you can
enclose either the picture of the guest or one of the pictures they took as a reminder of all the fun you had dining with the ducks.
